EVGA SuperNOVA NEX650G 650W Power Supply Review

EVGA does not have a lot to say about its SuperNOVA NEX650G Gold Power Supply. It does however mention it being designed with enthusiast needs, and this PSU being the "the best choice to power next generation enthusiast computers" with exceptional features, and stunning efficiency. We of course will be the judge of those claims.

Introduction

As a company, EVGA was founded in 1999, and is well known in the DIY computer industry for its high performance video cards, motherboards, and other computer components. Recently, EVGA has expanded its product offerings to include power supplies which of course draws our interest to it today. Currently, EVGA has a few lines of power supplies including the SuperNOVA NEX (insert wattage here) G series. Today’s EVGA SuperNOVA NEX650G power supply (120-PG-0650-GR) is the smallest capacity power supply that it offers in this product line and this unit is produced by FSP.

FSP Group is one of the few actual power supply manufacturers and can be found providing OEM services for a number of other brands at various times including OCZ, Zalman, AOpen, Antec, SilverStone, Super Talent, Sigma, and many more. This wide distribution of power supplies by FSP is not surprising given that it has been in business since 1993 and is one of the top 10 producers of power supplies in the world. FSP is also regarded as a manufacturer of basic workhorse type power supplies that "just gets the job done," although some of its previous high powered computer power supplies have been plagued by power quality issues.

One Step Forward, Two Steps Back?

The EVGA NEX650G is just one of three EVGA power supplies we have seen over the years.

EVGA does not sample HardOCP any review units, so we go out from time to time and purchase EVGA PSUs to see exactly what is going on with its products. We attempted to move our relationship forward this year with EVGA, but once again it fell on deaf ears. We have pretty much been on EVGA's shit list since we called it on the carpet many years ago for its less-than-stellar GPU heatsink system. And we were not very nice to EVGA when it blatantly used the Folding Community for its own marketing program. Anyway....

Among previous units, we have not seen anything great, however, the last EVGA power supply we saw (the 500B) did at least rank in the passable category which was certainly progress. Today, we are sticking close to that unit’s capacity as we move up the market a bit to look at the NEX650G. While this product is only 150W larger in capacity, it does shift market segments closer to the high-end where we saw the NEX1500 Classified crash and burn. Hopefully that will not be the case today. Before we get all negative Nancy though, let’s see what EVGA has to say about this unit:

The EVGAآ® SuperNOVA NEX750 and NEX650 Power Supplies are here in both Gold and Bronze rated options. Designed with enthusiast needs in mind the NEX series is the best choice to power next generation enthusiast computers. Combining 750W or 650W of continuous power with exceptional performance, stunning efficiency, and cutting-edge design and features, the NEX series power supplies are what you need to take your system to the next level.

With little there of real substance, let’s move on and see what we can expect when a user purchases the EVGA NEX650G in retail in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
