Raidmax Cobra Power 500W Power Supply Review

We tread off the beaten PSU path today with a power supply from Raidmax that is part of the Cobra series. The RX-500AF-B unit sports 500 watts of "Haswell Ready" power, a Bronze efficiency rating, advertised stable voltages, a "strong single +12V rail for high-end system heavy load configuration," plus a paint ball stained exterior.

Raidmax Technology CO., LTD (Raidtronics) is the "sister" brand of Sigma and is a division of Raidcom Technologies. As a company, Raidcom Technologies has been around for some time now as it was founded in 2000 and is most familiar to users because of the cases and other accessories produced under the Raidmax label. However, the Raidmax brand has carried power supply offerings for some time from various OEMs. Today, we have up the Raidmax branded Cobra Power 500W (RX-500AF-B/ RX-52036) which is sourced from a familiar OEM to Raidcom Technologies; Andyson.

Andyson International Co Ltd is a company that end users may or may not be familiar with as they do not have a retail presence in North America but Andyson have provided the basis for a number of power supplies from Hiper, Sunbeamtech, Sigma, BFG, Topower, InWin, and others. Most notably, Ultra has used Andyson for a number of its power supplies over the years and this combined with the other brands means we have become somewhat familiar with its products.

The Raidmax Cobra Power 500W is the 4th power supply we have seen from Raidcom Technologies but just the 2nd sold under the Raidmax brand. At 500W, it is also the smallest in capacity of these units. This may be somewhat of a blessing as we have seen a lot of high end competition at higher power output levels over the last couple of years and the last high powered unit we saw from Raidcom Technologies (the RX-1000AE) was not exactly what one would call a stellar performer. With today's step back to a lower power level, perhaps Raidmax will be able to reset and start off things on a solid foundation for future product and brand development. Before moving on, let's see what Raidmax has to say about this unit:

- Haswell Ready.

- 80 PLUSآ® Bronze certification guarantees more than 85% efficiency at typical loads.

- Stable voltage, low-noise levels by thermal controlled 13.5cm fan.

- Low noise and voltage regulate DC output quality perfectly.

- A strong single +12V rail for high-end system heavy load configuration provides stable and highly compatibility.

- The COBRA series offers complete electric protection by OVP, UVP, OPP, and SCP.

- Compliance with the latest EU ErP Direction.

- Fully safety certificate with CE, FCC, TUV, and UL.

With little more than a generic list of "features" being available, we truly don't have any idea what to expect from this unit. Perhaps if we move on and see what we have to look forward to when we purchase the Raidmax Cobra Power 500W power supply in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality this will become clear.
