Cryorig R1 Ultimate CPU Air Cooler Review

Cryorig is a name that is quite likely new to our fellow enthusiasts. When the company contacted us and asked us to review its news R1 Ultimate cooler, we took a look at the build design and it got us curious. The R1 Ultimate has an overall design that we have seen many times before, but surely had enough "new" to warrant a review.


Cryorig R1 Ultimate

As we mentioned in the introduction, Cryorig has added some unique features to the R1 Ultimate so let’s go over these briefly.

First up is the Heatpipe Convex-Align System. This essentially spaces out the heatpipes in a convex pattern which allows for more heatpipes in a given area. It should allow the heatpipes to soak up more heat from the CPU. Next up is the DirectCompress Soldering. This is a method for attaching the heatpipe to the cooling fins which allows for up to 10% more contact with the mating surfaces. Now that the heatpipes have soaked up more heat from the CPU these can transfer that heat more quickly to the cooling fins. Lastly we have the Jet Fin Acceleration System. This one is the most interesting. Each of the two tower cooling fin stacks consists of two sections; four total. The initial section is called the "lose[sic] air intake" and the second section is referred to as the "high density exhaust" section. (Editor's note: We think Cryorig was meaning to say "loose air intake.") Basically, since the second section of fins is denser and the air has to move through a smaller space, it will move faster. I realize this is a simplified explanation that overlooks some details but bear with me.

Individually, these features don’t seem all that exciting but when totaled together. They could however make for some very interesting performance improvements. Let’s take a closer look.

Package & Specs

Cryorig does a nice job of boxing up the R1 Ultimate. The outer packaging is colorful and detailed while the inner packaging is sturdy and protective.

    Cryorig encases the accessories in this slip box and labels everything on the cover. Everything has its own compartment and is very easy to work with. This is a level of detail that rivals companies such as Noctua. Cryorig even includes a Noctua-esque screw driver if you needed more proof of its drive to be a premium enthusiast package.

    The base of the R1 Ultimate is flat and clean of any aberrations. Given all the attention to craftsmanship we’ve seen thus far we would have been very surprised if the R1 Ultimate had a poorly finished base with any warping.

    Micro ATX

    Installing the R1 Ultimate is actually an easy process considering the size of this cooler. Cryorig has very much taken care to ensure a simple installation process and it shows.

    First, is the 4-2 install method which is always a win in our book. Secondly, the back plate gets held in place by screws which allows you to free your hands for the other parts. Lastly, Cryorig designed the R1 Ultimate so that you can actually tighten the last two screws with both fans already installed. That is some impressive engineering.

    The R1 Ultimate is a large cooler and with that comes certain side effects. The major one and the one that occurs with many large CPU air coolers is the encroachment on the RAM slots. Now thankfully it’s only the fan that gives us trouble and not the cooling fins. You can relocate the fan higher up but as you see from the picture below you’ll need to remove the shroud first. This is an easy process just keep that in mind if you use taller RAM as we do.

    All other areas are free and clear with the R1 Ultimate. There are a couple of close calls but the R1 manages to stay within its boundaries and not interfere with the PCIe slots or motherboard components.

    Installation & Contact

    Installing the R1 Ultimate while your motherboard is mounted in its case is going to be tricky depending on your setup due to the shear size of the unit.

    In our case we were unable to move the fan upwards on the heatsink since this would cause the fan to block the side lid of our chassis from closing. Given this precarious situation I decided I would test the cooler by removing the RAM stick from the motherboard and run with only one RAM module in single channel mode.

    The R1 Ultimate is a big cooler no matter what size motherboard you’re installing it on to. You’re going to want to make sure everything will fit. This includes your RAM and even your chassis. Installing the R1 Ultimate isn’t that difficult thanks to 4-2 mounting system and screw holes that are built into the cooler.

    The base of the R1 Ultimate looks to have made excellent contact with the CPU. Even so, you can see for the picture above the outer most heat pipes don’t cross directly over the CPU. This means the majority of the heat transfer will be up to the 5 inner most heat pipes.
