MSI N770 Lightning Overclocking Review

We take the new MSI N770 Lightning and overclock it to its maximum potential. We will compare it with a highly overclocked MSI GeForce GTX 680 Lightning and GIGABYTE Radeon HD 7970. Each GPU is getting its best chance to show us how well it can perform, as all of these GPUs are highly overclocked.

MSI N770 Lightning Overclocking Performance

On this page we are going to see all three video cards overclocked as previously described. The clock speeds are noted in the graphs. All testing is done in an apples-to-apples environment.

Metro: Last Light

In Metro: Last Light we tested at 2560x1600 with very high settings, and very high tessellation. Remember, in our initial evaluation very high tessellation was not playable on the GTX 680 or HD 7970, only on the MSI N770 Lightning.

When we overclock both the MSI N770 Lightning and MSI GeForce GTX 680 Lightning we find that performance is rather close. The MSI GTX 770 Lightning is just slightly faster. It seems the much faster 7.8GHz RAM really isn't making much of a difference; the core clock speed makes the most difference. The GIGABYTE Radeon HD 7970 overclocked falls right in line with performance to the MSI GeForce GTX 680 Lightning.

What has changed though is the playable settings. With these overclocks the GTX 680 and HD 7970 are now playable with very high tessellation turned on.

Tomb Raider

In Tomb Raider we are running at 2560x1600 with ultra settings and TressFX enabled. Once again the overclocked MSI N770 Lightning and MSI GTX 680 Lightning are equal in performance; there is no little difference. The faster memory clock on the GTX 770 doesn't make up any performance at all, likely due to this game being very shader intensive.

The GIGABYTE Radeon HD 7970 overclocked blows away both the MSI N770 Lightning and MSI GTX 680 Lightning overclocked in Tomb Raider. It is 23% faster than both. Also, even with these high overclocks the MSI N770 Lightning and MSI GTX 680 Lightning are not playable with TressFX enabled at this resolution still. The HD 7970 is.

Crysis 3

We are running Crysis 3 at 2560x1600 with SMAA 2TX and high settings. This time, there is a bit more of an improvement with the MSI N770 Lightning overclocked versus the MSI GeForce GTX 680 Lightning overclocked. The MSI N770 Lightning is 4% faster. That faster memory is finally making a slight impact, but 4% is hardly noticeable in-game. The GIGABYTE Radeon HD 7970 overclocked is keeping up quite well, right in-line with the MSI N770 Lightning. All three video cards are playable at this setting.

Far Cry 3

We are running Far Cry 3 at 2560x1600 with 2X MSAA and ultra settings. Again, there is just a slight advantage to the MSI N770 Lightning at 3% over the MSI GTX 680 Lightning. The GIGABYTE Radeon HD 7970 overclocked is actually the fastest video card here at its overclock. All three video cards are barely playable at this setting.
