Seasonic Platinum-660 660W Power Supply Review

Seasonic's new SS-660XP comes to us boasting high end PSU features in what we can consider a smaller wattage package than what we are used to seeing. This PSU has a fully modular design, great efficiency, optional Hybrid fan control allowing fanless, silent, and normal cooling modes. Does Seasonic have another winner?

Introduction

In the power supply realm, when consumers think of quiet and efficient power supplies one of the first companies that comes to mind is Seasonic and today we have our 12th look at a Seasonic branded unit. Today’s review is going to cover an interesting product, the PLATINUM-660 (SS-660XP2 Active PFC F3) which is an evolution of the X-660 but still a new member of Seasonic’s Platinum series of power supplies.

Seasonic is one of the older companies producing consumer power supplies having been founded in 1975 and entering the PC power supply production market in 1980. During that more than 30 years as a company Seasonic has cultivated lines of power supplies that are today some of the standard bearers for efficiency and quiet computing. This focus, and Seasonic’s reputation for quality, has lead to a real explosion in production as Seasonic can be found providing OEM services on various model lines for Antec, Corsair, PC Power and Cooling, and of course under its own Seasonic brand.

Excellent^2 = PLATINUM-660?

The Seasonic PLATINUM-660 is the 12th power supply from Seasonic that we have reviewed, and now the 2nd of the Platinum Series units we have reviewed. Among those units that are relevant to today's review, we reviewed the Seasonic X-660 and that was an excellent product, as well as the PLATINUM-1000 which was an excellent unit. Given that, the only thing that this really leaves us asking, "Will the performance of this mash-up today be additive or multiplicative?" No matter which, we have a good amount of experience with related units and, of late, Seasonic has been "really killing it!" We expect a lot from this unit and that might be an understatement. Before moving on to see if we are going to be elated or deflated with this unit, what does Seasonic have to say about this unit:

Sea Sonic's extended Platinum Series, which is currently the most complete 80 Plus Platinum series available on the market, entails the following products:

آ• Platinum 400 W / 460 W / 520 W FANLESS آ– Silent performance

آ• Seasonic has upgraded The X-400 and X-460 Fanless models from 80 Plus Gold to 80 Plus Platinum, and a new 520W Fanless model also joins the Platinum family.

آ• Platinum 660 W / 760 W / 860 W - Ultra performance and efficiency

آ• Platinum 1000 W / 1200 W (coming soon) - High-end gaming and overclocking

Sea Sonic's highly efficient power supplies in the Platinum 660 W to 1200 W range are top performers that at lower loads can operate absolute silently in semi-fanless mode. As an additional feature, all these units are equipped with a selector switch that enables users to choose between traditional fan control (S2FC) and semi-fanless mode (S3FC). This sophisticated S3FC design ensures that the fan will only start spinning at loads greater than 30% of the maximum load.

All the Seasonic Platinum Series power supplies utilize top quality components, such as gold-plated high current terminals and Japan-sourced 105℃ aluminum electrolytic capacitors, which contribute to high performance, reliability and extended product lifetime. Sea Sonic is committed to high quality and stands behind its products by offering 7 years warranty for all the units in the Platinum series.

With most of this sounding familiar to what we have seen from various X-Series units and Platinum series units in the past, let’s move on and see what we have to look forward to when we purchase the PLATINUM-660 in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
