Corsair Obsidian Series 550D Mid-Tower Case Review

Corsair was once synonymous with only quality RAM. Today we find Corsair’s diversification of its product line tremendously successful. Its focus and execution with the desktop PC enthusiast has lead to a great PSUs, SSDs, and cases to house all your high end equipment. Its Obsidian 550D case is another great product.

The subject of today's evaluation is the "Obsidian SeriesĀ® 550D Mid-Tower Case Quiet Case." The company claims that, not only does the 550D provide exceptional sound dampening qualities through carefully engineered noise reduction and sound isolation, it also has more than enough airflow for a high-performance system, even enough for "extreme-performance overclocking."

Exceptional sound dampening AND high performance cooling capabilities? In the same case? I guess we are just going to have to put those claims to the test. It has generally been our experience that you can have either or, but not both, with a few exceptions. It is very rare to find a case that can cater to the needs of the enthusiast as well as the "silent" PC crowd.

Product Packaging

The Corsair Obsidian Series 550D mid-tower case, like other cases we've received from Corsair, arrived in its bare product packaging. The box, constructed of double-walled corrugated cardboard that is glued along the seams, showed no sign of shipping damage. The overall measurements of the box are 22"H x 23.5"L x 11.5"W.

When it comes to cases, Corsair has chosen to forego the flashy packaging and slick graphics, instead opting for plain cardboard packaging adorned product information, name and company logo printed in black. The case itself is wrapped in a plastic bag and held in place by thick foam inserts.

NOTE: While shipping a case in its product packaging is done primarily to cut down on costs, we have stated repeatedly that we are not fans of the practice because of damage that can occur during shipping. Corsair is not the only company to do this, it is practically an industry standard now to ship cases this way. In our opinion, we think that a few extra dollars for an added layer of protection could cut down on shipping related damages and claims.
