PC Power & Cooling Silencer MkII 950W PSU Review

We test one of the latest PC Power & Cooling computer power supplies on the market. Does it strike a balance between server and enthusiast needs? We at least know one thing just by looking at the box, this one might actually live up to the "Silencer" branding for a change since the 80mm cooling fan is now gone.

Introduction

PC Power & Cooling was originally founded in 1985 by Doug Dodson and specialized in fans but the company quickly moved into the realm of computer power supplies. Over the years the PC Power & Cooling name has become most popular from their branding of the Turbo-Cool and Silencer lines of power supplies. That string of 21 years as an independent company recently ended when PC Power & Cooling was acquired by OCZ. Today we will be looking at the PC Power & Cooling Silencer Mk II 950W (PPCMK2S950) which is produced in conjunction with one of PC Power & Cooling’s new manufacturing partners brought onboard by OCZ; Sirfa.

Sirfa Electronics Co., Ltd. is a name that is not that familiar to most users but they have been around since 1996 when Sirtec established Sirfa as a factory in the Sirtec group on mainland China. Recently, June 2008, Sirtec sold off their interest in Sirfa making the company independent of the Sirtec brand. As such, while we have not seen any Sirfa produced power supplies under the Sirfa brand, some of the Sirtec units of the past were most likely produced at the Sirfa facility. That makes today’s Sirfa produced unit the first that we have seen under this label and we look forward to seeing what there is to be had from this newly independent company.

Let's Try This "Silent" Thing One More Time

The PC Power & Cooling Silencer MkII 950W is the third unit from the Silencer line of power supplies that we have reviewed, and this unit represents a slight bump in DC output capacity over the last unit we reviewed, the Silencer 910. The previous Silencer units we reviewed have been very good products, but the moniker Silencer was, at best, wishful thinking and at worst, downright deceiving. Today, PC Power & Cooling is back with another Silencer unit, and due to its track record with these units we are expecting nothing less than a good unit that is ridiculously loud in direct contrast to what we are being sold on with the Silencer moniker. Then again, there have been some serious changes to this units form-factor so perhaps this time they got it right? Before moving on let's see what PC Power & Cooling has to say about this unit:

The new Silencer Mk II 950W from the power supply experts at PC Power & Cooling is another leap forward for the legendary Silencer line. A thorough update, the new Silencer Mk II strikes the right balance between server-class industry standard topology and the cutting-edge of enthusiast computer power supply design. Built with industrial and professional power users in mind, key features of the 950W Mk II include a Single +12V Rail for maximum and efficient power distribution, a generous thermally controlled 135mm double-ball bearing fan for maximum airflow at near-silent audible noise levels, extremely tight and well regulated electrical noise and ripple, an ideal array of connector types for each wattage, and ultra-high efficiency, converting up to a full 88% of AC to DC power at typical loads. The Silencer Mk II Series is fully compliant with the latest ATX12V and EPS12V specifications. Power-packed and built to last with a 7-Year Warranty.

Let’s move on and see what we have to look forward to when we purchase the PC Power & Cooling Silencer Mk II 950W power supply in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
