Thermaltake Toughpower XT 775W PSU Review

Thermaltake launches a new Toughpower PSU aimed right at the heart of Fermi users. Where does this new Toughpower stand when it comes to clean smooth power, and certainly let's not forget about value.

Introduction

Thermaltake Technology Company is back for a seventh time through our power supply testing program with their new Toughpower XT 775W. As a company, Thermaltake has a rather short history being founded in just 1999, but in that short time it has grown rapidly. While Thermaltake's primary focus has been on thermal solutions, it has for some time now maintained a group of product lines dedicated to power supplies. The early power supplies in these lines were often manufactured by Sirtec, but with the launch of the Toughpower line almost 3 years ago Thermaltake took their power supply business in a new, and quite frankly better, direction as they paired with CWT. Today, we are looking at another product from Thermaltake's partnership with Channel Well Technology the new Toughpower XT 775W (TPX-775M).

Channel Well Technology (CWT) was founded and began manufacturing power supplies in 1993. Since 1993 Channel Well Technology products have shown up under various guises including Antec, Xclio, 2theMax, CWT, Thermaltake, Xigmatek, and Corsair. While most familiar to our US users from when they used to provide OEM services for Antec, CWT is one of the more complete OEM manufacturers as they have a fairly high level of vertical integration providing transformers all the way up to its well designed independently regulated SMPS. Recently however, CWT has begun stretching out and is providing OEM services for a number of brands as today’s unit demonstrates.

Out with the Old XT, In with the New XT!

The Thermaltake Toughpower XT 775W represents the second evolution of the Toughpower line since Thermaltake introduced it a few years ago. The first evolution of this product line, the XT, we saw when we reviewed the Toughpower XT 850W and there really was nothing spectacular about that unit either time (1,2) we looked at in our testing. Today though, Thermaltake is back with a new Toughpower, the XT 775W, which differs from the old XT units in that it drops the PSH platform from CWT for the DSG platform. We have seen the DSG platform previously used by Corsair in the TX950W to great effect, so today we have high hopes for the Toughpower XT 775W. Before we move on to the actual testing, what does Thermaltake say they have in store for us with this unit?

Toughpower XT Series (ALL NEW)

Continuing its high-performance bloodline, the all-new Toughpower XT is meaner, badder and much more robust. By utilizing the most advanced double-forward & DC to DC Converter design along with highest-grade Japanese capacitors & solid state capacitors with ability to withstand up to 105°C (221°F), Toughpower XT series power supply is able to deliver unprecedented performance with exceptional voltage regulation, power efficiency and long-lasting reliability that are unrivaled by any of current power supplies on the market.

Let’s move on to see what else may be just like that unit when we purchase the Thermaltake Toughpower XT 775W in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
