890GX / SB850 Chipset Motherboard Video Preview
Today AMD is announcing its newest generation motherboard chipset family on the Gigabyte 890GPA-UD3H motherboard. It is comprised of the 890GX Northbridge, and SB850 Southbridge. If you are looking for a board with integrated graphics, you had better put the AMD 890GX on your short list. We are more excited about seeing native SATA 6Gb/s RAID than anything else, and we queue up a 4-disk RAID 0 array worthy of 4TB.
Introduction
Today's video previews the new Gigabyte 890GPA-UD3H motherboard. It also previews one of the most exciting features of the new SB850 Southbridge chipset from AMD; and that is SATA 6Gbps technology. If you are not familiar with SATA 6Gb/s tech, you can read up on it here. The new 890GX from AMD looks to be a powerhouse when it comes to integrated graphics and possibly will end up being the defacto-standard for HTPC, but we will have to see how that plays out. We are yet unsure about overclocking as well, but will be getting to that in the coming days. Until then, enjoy our preview and benchmarking of the SATA 6Gb/s technology using a set RAID 0 4-drive array consisting of Western Digital's finest 1TB Black Caviar hard drives. It is native 6Gb/s, 64MB of Cache, and 7200 RPM. HardOCP has standardized on this hard drive for current testing.
The Gigabyte 890GPA-UD3H motherboard boasts being the first motherboard that is AMD 6-Core CPU-Ready!
The first motherboard featuring the AMD 890GX chipset paired with the all new SB850 South Bridge, the GIGABYTE GA-890GPA-UD3H offers the industry’s first native support for Serial ATA 6Gbps for up to 6 devices. The AMD SB850 also offers the industry’s first Serial ATA 6 Gbps RAID support, allowing users to configure RAID 0,1,5 and 10 for maximum data performance or enhanced data backup. Also equipped with GIGABYTE 3x USB Power Boost and USB 3.0 support by utilizing the industry-leading NEC® controller, the GIGABYTE GA-890GPA-UD3H ensures users are ready to take advantage the next wave of high speed data transfer and storage technologies.
The GIGABYTE GA-890GPA-UD3H also features the integrated ATI Radeon™ HD 4290 IGP (Integrated Graphics Processor) with DirectX 10.1 support and 128M DDR3 sideport memory, allowing for easy overclock of the default 700MHz GPU clock up to 1150MHz for a 3DMark06 score of 3300 or above, which is 18% higher than the previous generation AMD 790GX chipset and higher than any other IGP platform. The graphics potential of the board is further extended with the addition of two PCI-E 2.0 x16 graphics slots, allowing users to run ATI CrossFireX™ (running at x8,x8), or a single card at x16 including the next generation DirectX 11 graphics cards for some ATI Hybrid CrossFireX™ action, providing an enhanced level of gaming performance, productivity and platform power efficiency.
