AMD ATI Radeon HD 5770 and HD 5750 Review
Performance on a budget! That is what AMD is bringing you today with the launch of the ATI Radeon HD 5700 series. The new HD 5750 and HD 5770 are priced to sell, but don’t skimp on gaming performance, all while staying cool and power efficient. We have also added Resident Evil 5 and Batman: AA to our gameplay testing.
Breaking it down
We were impressed with the level of performance provided by the ATI Radeon HD 5770 and Radeon HD 5750. Taking into consideration price points, perceived memory bandwidth constraints, and specifications, we were delighted to find high resolutions with AA playable.
Batman: Arkham Asylum
This game has an undeniable slant toward NVIDIA video cards. NVIDIA has spent a lot of time with the Batman: Arkham Asylum developers finding ways to tweak performance, optimize, and introduce PhysX effects. We were not surprised to see the GeForce GTS 250, which is a video card now at $109 on Newegg, perform very well in Batman: Arkham Asylum. What we didn’t expect was that the low-end $129 Radeon HD 5750 would also perform very well in Batman: Arkham Asylum. We were able to run this game at 2560x1600, which is no small feat for a low-end video card, with the highest in-game settings. We were also delighted when we found we could enable 4X AA at 1920x1200 greatly reducing aliasing. The Radeon HD 5770 also performed well at 2560x1600 and allowed us to enable 8X AA at 1920x1200.
Resident Evil 5
We think there might be some performance issues in RE5 on ATI’s latest generation video cards. We experienced a graphics bug which results in overblown HDR bloom on both HD 5700 series video cards. This problem was not present on the Radeon HD 4870 and Radeon HD 4770. It is very possible this is keeping performance from where it should be on the Radeon HD 5750 since it matched Radeon HD 4770 performance in this game. Still, we were able to play at 2560x1600 highest in-game settings on the Radeon HD 5770, and 1920x1200 on the Radeon HD 5750. High resolution gaming was still possible, even being bugged, on the Radeon HD 5770.
NFS Shift
AMD has informed us that they do not believe they are achieving the level of performance capable out of their new video cards in this game. However, that isn’t stopping the Radeon HD 5750 and Radeon HD 5770 to provide the best gameplay experience possible at these price points. This game showed us that the Radeon HD 5770 can beat the Radeon HD 4870 1GB in performance, it just depends on the game, but the capability is there if the scenario is right. It also showed us that 1920x1200 with 8X AA is possible even on the Radeon HD 5750!
Crysis: Warhead
Crysis Warhead is undoubtedly an immensely hard game to perform well in. In this game, the Radeon HD 4870 1GB, for whatever reason, had an advantage and allowed the best gameplay experience by allowing mostly "Enthusiast" settings. The Radeon HD 5770 certainly provided an advantage over the Radeon HD 5750 and GeForce GTS 250. The Radeon HD 5750 was a definite upgrade over the Radeon HD 4770.
