BFG Tech LS-1000 and LS-1200 Power Supplies

BFG Technologies has recently gotten into the business of fully built computers called Phobos. While most of our readers may not want a computer built for them, you certainly want high quality components when you do build one. BFG Tech has recently started selling the 1kw and 1.2kw OEM computer power supplies previously reserved for Phobos owners only.

Overview

The first thing we are going to look at with the BFG LS-1000 and LS-1200 are their packaging, accessories, and documentation. While none of these items is a real make or break item for a power supply the packaging quite often contains a lot of information about the product we are purchasing. The inclusion of an owner’s manual that provides actual information about our product is also of great help. Accessories are almost unnecessary with a power supply as the unit is self contained, unless it is modular, but there cases where a manufacturer can include useful accessories to make installation, routing and use more efficient.

The packaging for both the BFG LS-1000 and LS-1200 are both simple plain brown boxes with just the BFG logo on it. This packaging is very much like that of a lot of PC Power and Cooling offerings. However, these products from BFG at least are OEM products, not retail, so there isn’t much a user could (or should) expect from them in this regard. It is important to note on these units however, that while OEM products, they still carry a 5 year warranty from BFG once you register them.

As we see from the power information available, these two units are very similar in many ways. Both units are capable of supporting multiple graphics card solutions (which should be a given since BFG ships them in their Phobos systems) with their multiple PCI-Express connectors (both modified 8 pin and 6 pin) and significant 12v capacity. Indeed, the LS-1000 has 96% of its capacity available to the 12v rails while the LS-1200 has 90% of its capacity available to the 12v rails. These 12v rails are divided up into 6 OCP limited 12v rails and do a good job of spreading the load around so that there should be no issue of overdrawing any single 12v rail. The other interesting point of note about these units is the massive +5vsb capacity of 6A. This is necessary for these units to power the LCD screen when they are used in the Phobos systems that BFG markets, and as such would be sufficient for powering such a setup outside of a Phobos build if users were so inclined to do so. Otherwise, from the information here there is not much different between these two units other than their 12v capacity.

Once we open the packaging for the BFG LS-1000 and LS-1200 we are left with just the unit and a power cord. Again, this is due to these units being OEM products not retail products so we can't complain too much about this as users and integrators alike know that OEM products just include the part ordered. So with that out of the way let's move on and see what these units look like on the inside.
