PC Power & Cooling is back with a product that has just been introduced to the market. This Silencer unit is rated at 750w for powering the neediest CrossFire video card configurations and has the PCIe video card 8-pin power connector for the 2900 XT overclockers.
We recently published our first review of a PC Power & Cooling product in our Turbo-Cool 1KW-SR evaluation and received overwhelming amounts of feedback. One of the most polite responses received was from PC Power & Cooling themselves in which they politely thanked us for our take on the Turbo-Cool and asked about another shot at the review process. So today we grant them that opportunity and present the PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 Quad CrossFire Edition (S75CF) review.
The Silencer 750 has gone through a few different revisions since its introduction with the new “Ferrari red” CrossFire Edition being the most recent. This unit differs from the previously reviewed Turbo-Cool in a host of ways. The Silencer 750 Quad is a more modern and typical approach to power supply design and comes from a different OEM. Rather than using Win-Tact for these new Silencer models PC Power & Cooling has chosen to use one of the most respected companies in the quiet computing realm, Seasonic, to produce the Silencer 750.
Seasonic is one of the older companies producing consumer power supplies having been founded in 1975 and entering the PC power supply production market in 1980. During that more than 30 years as a company Seasonic has cultivated lines of power supplies that are today some of the standard bearers for efficiency and quiet computing. This focus, and their reputation for quality, has lead to a real explosion in production as Seasonic can be found providing OEM services on various model lines for Antec, Corsair, PC Power and Cooling, and of course under their own Seasonic brand. Currently the Silencer 750 is the highest output capacity power supply users will find being manufactured by Seasonic in North America as the x900 is not available here yet and the SS-750JS seems to have never hit the market (though it was UL and 80Plus certified some time ago). So for users in the US looking for high-end Seasonic products the Silencer 750 Quad CrossFire is the current pinnacle.
Obviously from the Silencer name PC Power & Cooling is marketing this product as being a quieter solution than the Turbo-Cool line of power supplies. In doing so they have paired themselves with king of quiet Seasonic, but PC Power & Cooling is best known for making all out performance based products. So how do they rectify these two often diametrically opposed models? According to PC Power & Cooling's product page the Silencer 750 Quad CrossFire is:
The all-new Silencer® 750 Quad power supply series gives you legendary PC Power and Cooling performance and reliability along with a unique ultra-quiet cooling design and a price that seals the deal. The matching brilliant Ferrari red exterior of this special edition Silencer 750 PSU will look amazing in your CrossFire based high-performance graphics system or gaming rig.
Now that we know what PC Power & Cooling expects of this product let’s see what we have to look forward to when we purchase the PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 Quad CrossFire power supply in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
