ATI Mobility Radeon X700
ATI has raised the bar for thin mobile notebook performance with their launch of the Mobility Radeon X700. Read on to find out what kind of gaming experience you can expect out of this latest offering from ATI in the world of thin mobile notebooks.
DOOM 3
(OpenGL)
We are using the full retail version of DOOM 3 and left the control panel to “Application Preference” for AA and AF. We set the DOOM 3 in-game quality setting and resolution that played the best.
For our manual run-through, we chose the “Enpro” level and used FRAPS to capture the framerate every second and started our run-through from the beginning to half way through the mission. We played the game in a normal fashion.

We found that on the Acer TravelMate 8100 with Mobility Radeon X700 that 1024x768 in High Quality mode was the highest playable quality setting. At this setting performance was fast enough for enjoyable gameplay. There were a few situations where the performance dropped below 30FPS, but only in the most intense situations. Overall the framerates were above 30FPS and the game was playable, not the fastest we’ve seen, but very enjoyable still.
Image Quality:
At 1024x768 the ratio doesn’t quite match the ratio of the widescreen on the laptop. However, at such a low resolution it isn’t really skewed so badly that the game is un-enjoyable. The screenshots above show that the image quality is exactly what we would expect from a desktop ATI Radeon X700 series based video card. We found no errors in rendering with any of the effects, textures or shadows. Though the resolution isn’t high for a notebook this game looks quite good and aliasing really isn’t noticed even though we are only at 1024x768.
