BFGTech GeForce 6800 OC

BFGTech’s GeForce 6800 OC is taken through our full gamut of gameplay evaluation to find out how this card compares to others. In case you are not up on nomenclature, this is the "vanilla" or "non-ultra" 6800 that has its pipelines scaled back to meet a lower price point.

DOOM 3

(OpenGL)

Well, it is here, the game we have all been waiting for and we will now add it to our gameplay evaluation. In our recent DOOM 3 Hardware Guide we covered a lot of systems and video cards using this game. Therefore since we are using the same Athlon 64 FX-53 system we tested in that guide for this review DOOM 3 performance will look similar. However, unlike the guide in this review we have two other video cards we will be comparing on the same graph. We highly suggest you read the Hardware Guide to get a feel how DOOM 3 performs on various systems and video cards.

We are using the full retail version of DOOM 3 here and leaving each video cards driver control panel to “Application Preference” for AA and AF. We set the DOOM 3 in-game quality setting and resolution that played the best on each card. Remember in DOOM 3’s “High Quality” mode 8XAF is automatically enabled.

For our manual run-through we chose the “Enpro” level and started our run-through from the beginning to half way through the mission. We played the game in a normal fashion which means each run-through on each card will be a little different, but still represents the same course through the level.

These are the settings we found best playable on each card, all Advanced Options Enabled and the game quality set to “High Quality”.

We found that the BFGTech GeForce 6800 OC performed best in DOOM 3 at 1600x1200 in High Quality, which enables 8XAF. Performance was very playable throughout with only a couple instances in our run-through of slightly dropping below 30fps, which in DOOM 3 is very playable. The BFGTech GeForce 6800GT OC managed to achieve the same settings and did perform better than the GeForce 6800 OC as expected, but the performance difference wasn’t earth shattering. The BFGTech GeForce 6800 OC really provides great performance at these settings in DOOM 3. The Radeon X800Pro performed worse, allowing only up to 1280x1024 at High Quality and even then still clocked in with lower performance overall, dropping the most below 30FPS.

In the comparison screenshot above we have cropped out a portion of Mars City to look at texture quality and filtering. As you can see above all three video cards are rendering the textures and filtering identical in this in-game screenshot. There are no noticeable differences between each card image quality wise.

The three screenshots above are full size 1600x1200 shots, and are large in file size, though they have been JPEG compressed. They were all three taken on the BFGTech GeForce 6800 OC in graphically intensive spots to show you the kinds of framerates we experienced in these very graphically intense scenes. As you can see the framerates are very playable, and the game looks great on the BFGTech GeForce 6800 OC.
