VisionTek Radeon X800Pro

VisionTek’s new X800Pro video card evaluated using seven popular game titles while focusing on real-world gameplay performance and image quality. ATI’s Radeon X800Pro and NVIDIA’s GeForce 6800Ultra are compared within.

Introduction:

VisionTek is one of the first add-in-board partners out the gate offering an X800Pro based video card. If you haven’t read up on what ATI is bringing to the table in the form of the X800Pro then first read our X800Pro tech article and then our initial review of ATI’s Radeon X800 series.

Over a year ago VisionTek changed course by moving from NVIDIA GPU based video cards to ATI based cards. Their reputation of high quality parts with high overclocking potential carried over to their new ATI cards. The VisionTek 9800Pro we tested a year ago was one of the highest overclocks we had achieved on a 9800Pro in a stock configuration. It will be interesting to see what their new X800Pro will do.

VisionTek’s very clean and organized box clearly states on the front that this is an AGP8X/4X card and has 256MB of DDR-3 memory at 900MHz. It also lists the VPU core speed right on the front at 475MHz. One of the most important bullets on the front is the Lifetime Warranty that VisionTek offers. The back of the box explains the technology features present on the X800Pro. When you open the box up and slide the contents out you will see that the video card is securely held in place inside its own smaller box while the cables and CD’s are wrapped up beside it. There is a warning sticker on the card telling you that you need to plug this video card up to a power connector.

Everything about this video card is identical to the ATI Radeon X800Pro we tested save for the purple Molex power connector. The design, layout and heatsink fan unit are exactly the same as the built by ATI X800Pro.

The label tells us this is a Radeon X800Pro with 256MB that was made in China. Only one Molex connector is required on this video card. The RAM modules being used are Samsung K4J55323QF-GC20 which is rated at 2ns. This gives us a theoretical maximum frequency of 500MHz. Since the memory is clocked at 450MHz by default we have a good amount of headroom for memory overclocking.

Cables include S-Video, Composite, DVI to VGA converter and a power splitter with purple connectors.

At the time this box was sent to us they did not have the CD finalized that will be included with the package. The retail boxes will have a CD that includes the ATI Catalyst drivers, some ATI 3D demos, a PDF manual and Powerstrip. While this package is not a retail sample the hardware will be representatve of what you can buy in the store.
