Pentium 4 Road into 2005

A quick look at what we can expect out of Intel as they reach into the 4GHz territory.

Here is a good look at what Pentium 4 CPUs the enthusiast will be relying on throughout the rest of the year. We are sure that this roadmap comes as no surprise to many. What is interesting is that two sources have informed us this morning of Intel putting their 1066MHz Front Side Bus into the mix (not on our chart below) in the form of a 3.46GHz Pentium 4 Extreme Edition. It is yet to be seen what chipset will actually support this CPU.

Our beloved Northwood core is in fact being phased out with the expected top-end of 3.4GHz. We do expect to see LGA775 Northwoods from 2.8GHz and up, so while the Northwood is on the way out, it would seem its life if far from over and Intel is not counting on the Prescott to fully satisfy the marketplace.

It will of course be interesting for the hardware enthusiasts and gamers to see how the 2.8GHz Prescott overclocks after the process has had time to mature into 2005 and certainly the 2.8GHz Prescott will then be rather inexpensive.

You will see the "7XX" and "5XX" model numbers noted in the title of our chart. The 7XX refers to a P4EE and the 5XX to a P4. You should not expect to see 64-bit capable CPUs in the Intel camp till Windows64 is a reality.
