Radeon X800XT-PE and X800Pro Review

We test the new Radeon X800Pro and X800XT Platinum Edition against a GeForce 6800Ultra and a Radeon 9800XT focusing on real world gameplay performance and image quality.

Introduction:

Now what we all have been waiting for. ATI’s new X800Pro and X800XT Platinum Edition versus NVIDIA’s GeForce 6800Ultra.

To learn all about what ATI is bringing to the table with the new X800 series please read our X800 series tech article as it will explain all the technical details you need to know.

The Cards:

Today ATI is launching two cards, the X800Pro and the X800XT Platinum Edition. Both are based on the same technology and have the exact same features. The only difference is frames per second performance. In order to meet those performance differences ATI has reduced the number of pipelines and clocked the core and memory speed lower on the X800Pro.

The X800Pro is a 12 pixel pipeline video card operating at 475MHz core and 450MHz (900MHz DDR) memory. The X800XT is a 16 pixel pipeline video card operating at 520MHz core and 560MHz (1.12GHz DDR) memory. Since these cards are the same built by ATI cards that you will be able to buy on the shelf we can call this an actual review, and not a preview. This review represents exactly the performance what you will get with a retail ATI card of the same model in terms of frames per second and Image Quality.

Something you will notice when looking at the pictures below, both the X800Pro and the X800XT look identical, there isn’t one lick of a difference in appearance.

In fact, the boards are exactly the same size as a Radeon 9800XT pictured in comparison below. The new cooler on the X800Pro and XT is actually smaller; it doesn’t need to cool the GDDR3 memory chips.

The X800XT Platinum Edition:

The X800XT is a red single-slot single Molex connector AGP8X video card. SFF owners raise up, this card will fit inside with no problem. The yellow connector on the rear of the card is for a composite video-in connector so that you can run a cable to your video capture port on the front of your case if you have one. ATI says this will most likely not be on the shipping cards in North America as it is a more popular feature in Europe.

The memory being used is Samsung K4J55323QF-GC16 GDDR3 which is rated at 1.667ns for a theoretical maximum of 600MHz.

The X800Pro:

The Radeon X800Pro is exactly the same as the X800XT Platinum Edition physically. Every component is in the same place, the HSF unit is the same, and it only uses one Molex connector.
