ABIT Ti4400 & VisionTek Ti4400 Showdown

Hey! We gotta do something to make these GF4 reviews interesting! Oh yeah, we OC the hell out of them and live to tell about it.

The cards and configurations used in benchmarking are as follows:

Gainward Ultra/750XP Ti 4600 (128MB) - Clocked at default 300MHz/650MHz for all tests using driver version 28.32.

ATI Radeon 8500LE (128MB) - Overclocked to 275MHz/275MHz (Normal 8500 speeds) with WinXP driver version 6052 for all ATI 8500 128MB tests. Clocked at default 250MHz/250MHz for ATI 8500LE 128MB tests with WinXP driver version 6052.

ABIT Siluro GeForce4 Ti 4400 (128MB) - Clocked at default 275MHz/550MHz for all tests using driver version 28.32 and overclocked to 300MHz/665MHz for all overclocking results.

VisionTek Xtasy GeForce4 Ti 4400 (128MB) - Clocked at default 275MHz/550MHz for all tests using driver version 28.32 and overclocked to 320MHz/675MHz for all overclocking results.

3DMark2001:

To get a good idea of where these video cards stand against each other, we ran these tests at 1024x768, 1280x1024, and 1600x1200 resolutions. Each test was run with 32 bit color AND 32 bit textures with no DXTC compression. Resolutions for each card are listed on the legend on the right side of the graphs.

The VisionTek GF4 Ti 4400's scores are slightly above the ABIT Siluro's results, although it's negligible and within the margin of error. Overclocking the ABIT Siluro increased our scores beyond a GeForce4 Ti 4600 at default speeds. Although the 300MHz core speed on the overclocked ABIT Siluro is identical to the GeForce4 Ti 4600's defaults, the memory clock is slightly higher at 665MHz versus 650MHz on the Ti 4600. The VisionTek's higher overclock surpasses the Ti 4600 by a noticeable margin. Comparing the ABIT and VisionTek cards at Ti 4400 speeds to the Ti 4600 at stock speeds, you'll notice how large the margin really is. There's a 543 3DMark difference at 1600x1200 and a 399 one at 1024x768.

Quake3:

Now on to the de facto 3D benchmark of the last few years, Quake 3. We're using patch version 1.17 so that you can compare with all of the past reviews here at the [H]. Quake3 Bench was used running at Max Settings and Demo001.

Again, the VisionTek is pulling in slightly higher benchmark results that wouldn't be noticeable in actual gameplay. You might notice an oddity here where the Ti 4600 scores are beating that of the ABIT Siluro Ti 4400 overclocked with a faster memory clock. With the VisionTek's higher core and memory clock, however, it's able to surpass the Ti 4600. Notice the scores of the Ti 4600 and the overclocked VisionTek at 1024x768 resolution; there's only a 0.9 FPS difference. This would suggest that even at 1024x768, the GeForce4 is starving for CPU speed.
