[H]ot Deal of the Day

Just a reminder to those of you wanting to upgrade your memory, this week’s [H]ot Deal gives you a total of $20 off this Corsair XMS3 6GB DDR3 1600 kit and you get free shipping as well. That leaves you with more than enough cash to pick up a new RatPadz GS or RatPadz XT (you still get $5 off + free shipping too). How is that for a double [H]ot deal?

Nitrous Oxide Destroying the Ozone

Want to see a tree hugger squeal louder than the tires on a dragster at the race track? Then slap a nitrous oxide kit on your old big block, gas guzzling muscle car and destroy the ozone layer a quarter mile at a time. Vin Diesel approves this message.

By comparing the ozone depletion potential-weighted anthropogenic emissions of N2O with those of other ozone-depleting substances (ODSs), we show that N2O emission currently is the single most important ODS emission and is expected to remain the largest throughout the 21st century.

Broadband Requests Far Exceed Amount Available

Why are people acting surprised that requests for money far exceed the actual funds available? It’s not like we didn’t see this coming. It will be interesting to see who actually gets the funds.

Businesses, nonprofits, libraries, hospitals and state and local governments have applied for more than $28 billion in funds for broadband projects from the Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration and the Department of Agriculture's Rural Utilities Service.

eBay Used Craigslist for ‘Data Mining,’ Filing Says

What’s the latest in that eBay vs. Craigslist lawsuit/countersuit? Allegations that eBay used Craigslist for data mining. Thanks to tarlog for the linkage.

Executives of EBay, the most-visited e-commerce site, obtained a seat on Craigslist’s board after buying 28 percent of the company’s shares and used that access for "data mining," lawyers for Craigslist claimed in a filing in a Delaware lawsuit over the company’s decision to adopt corporate defense measures.

BFG Tech LS-1000 and LS-1200 Power Supplies

We have just posted our evaluation of the LS-1000 and LS-1200 power supplies from BFG Technologies. Anyone in need of a big, bad ass power supply should give some serious thought to these two PSUs.

News Image

The BFG LS-1000 and LS-1200 represent two units that are certainly not anything revolutionary like the BFG ES/EX series. However, both units are certainly competent performers in all measures today. When we first saw these base models presented by Cooler Master we had very good things to say about them overall and today that is certainly true once more. However, the last time we saw these Enhance platforms the Real Power Pro 1250W was not quite up to snuff when we dropped the AC input voltage down to 100v at full load. Today however, the LS-1200 did pass that portion of testing which is very good as this little issue kept us from giving a full nod to the Real Power Pro 1250W previously. With this improvement we are left with a very solid platform in both the LS-1000 and LS-1200 that should be easily at home in BFG's Phobos systems, and in those users systems who snag these OEM products from Newegg.

IRS Using Facebook To Catch Tax Dodgers

If you owe the government a lot of back taxes, you should probably avoid bragging on Facebook about a new job, added income or your whereabouts unless you want a personal visit from the taxman.

In Minnesota, authorities were able to levy back taxes on the wages of a long-sought tax evader after he announced on MySpace that he would be returning to his home town to work as a real-estate broker and gave his employer's name. The state collected several thousand dollars, the full amount due.

Bill Gives President Emergency Control of Internet

Why on earth would the president ever need (legitimate) emergency control of the internet?

The new version would allow the president to "declare a cybersecurity emergency" relating to "non-governmental" computer networks and do what's necessary to respond to the threat. Other sections of the proposal include a federal certification program for "cybersecurity professionals," and a requirement that certain computer systems and networks in the private sector be managed by people who have been awarded that license.
