TV More Popular Than The Web?

According to a new study, people will spend more time watching TV than they will on the web…at least for the next three or four years. Wasn’t there another study done two weeks ago that said almost the opposite of what this study says?

Time spent watching television will rise faster than leisure time spent on the Web through 2012, while a major audience for Internet video could take even longer to develop, consultancy Bain & Co said on Thursday.

Quad FX Dead? Do We Care?

I have now had two emails pointing me to rumors in the industry about the cancellation of the "4X4" platform from AMD. My questions are, does anyone really care and was multi processor gaming ever alive? I think things like Skulltrail and 4X4 / Quad FX are great technology solutions when it comes to video editing and encoding, but do gamers really need to be building or buying dual processor rigs while we currently have quad core boxes that go largely underutilized. Do you guys care about multiprocessor gaming boxes? I honestly could care less because we still live in the land of largely GPU-limited gaming engines. Maybe you feel differently.

Top 10: Hottest Women In Tech

AskMen.com has posted their pick for the Top 10: Hottest Women In Tech. While each of these women were certainly worthy of the list, I can think of a handful of women that should have made the list. What about you? Who do you think should have made the list?

As you can see, many of the planet’s most beautiful women have shattered society’s preconceived notions by unapologetically embracing their inner geeks. Any (and all) of the aforementioned hottest women in tech could easily find work within the world of fashion or modeling, yet they’ve all chosen to pursue a more scientifically minded calling -- and for that, we’re downright thankful.

Microsoft, Autodesk Lose Patent Appeal

Remember that patent infringement case against Microsoft and Autodesk over the use of two passwords during product activation? Well the appeals court sided against MS and Autodesk so the two companies will have to pay out more that $140 million.

Commerce Township, Mich.-based z4 argued that Microsoft's Windows XP and Office 2003 suite of productivity software used its patented method of asking computer users to supply two passwords, or authorization codes, before they could fully use new software. The technology in question also can be used to deactivate software.

Google Purges Malware Sites Targeting Searchers

What is the old saying? Something like “it’s about damn time!” or something like that. Not sure why it took Google so long to take action but I am glad they finally did.

In response to a concerted effort by cyber criminals to infect the computers of Google users with malware and make them unwitting partners in crime, Google has apparently purged tens of thousands of malicious Web pages from its index.

Free AGEIA Game At Fileshack

The folks at Shacknews are hosting AGEIA’s free game Warmonger. The Unreal Engine 3 powered shooter has six levels and, although it is recommended, a PhysX card is not required. Here’s to hoping it is better than those levels released the other day. Post your thoughts in the comments section.

The 437mb download includes six levels featuring a wide array of destructable objects and buildings. An AGEIA PhysX accelerator is required to get the most out of this game, however it will run without one.

Phone May Not Have Killed Worker

Remember the guy we told you about yesterday that was apparently killed by an exploding cell phone battery? Remember we said that if the battery exploded after he died he would be the unluckiest man on the planet? Turns out he really was the unluckiest man on the planet....well, besides that whole "dying" thing. frown

The quarry worker, whose name has not been released, was found dead Wednesday with a melted phone battery in his shirt pocket, according to police. He also had a broken spine and ribs as well as heart and lung injuries.

California Schools Buy 1,000 ASUS Eee PCs

A school district in California has bought 1000 ASUS Eee PCs for $650,000. Other than the price ($650 each?), I think this is a pretty cool idea.

Thursday, school officials said they purchased 1,000 wireless laptops that fit on a desk alongside textbooks and notebooks, as well as give students the opportunity to build a digital portfolio of essays, drawings and other creations.

Where Do Those Donated XO Laptops Go?

Finally, someone asked the OLPC group the question we’ve all been wondering...“Where are all of those donated XO laptops going?”

An OLPC spokeswoman said that donated laptops would be headed to countries such as Afghanistan, Rwanda, Cambodia, Haiti, and Mongolia--places that generally couldn't afford big laptop giveaways. In general, she said that the donated laptops would help "jump-start" a program in those places, though she said Mongolia and perhaps others on that list might also be eventual customers.
