Internet Explorer Patch

Microsoft has released a patch two weeks ahead of it’s normal patching schedule to fix that critical flaw in IE.

The patch was released two weeks ahead of a regularly scheduled monthly security update after Microsoft said it became aware of a "public attack utilizing the vulnerability." The company added that the impact on customers was "limited."

Intel Developer Forum Coverage

What did Intel have to say on their first day of IDF? A little about Quad-core, a little about 45nm, and a little about future 80-core processors. Read about it here, and discuss it in our forums here.

ATi First With WHQL Vista Drivers

Underlining the company's leadership in developing hardware and drivers to support Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Vista operating system, ATI Technologies Inc. today announced that its driver has been granted the graphics industry's first Windows Hardware Quality Lab (WHQL) certification for Windows Vista by Microsoft. WHQL certification sets a high bar for quality and reliability, and is considered essential by many business and home users. Windows Vista is the first version of the Microsoft operating system that requires hardware for 3D acceleration. WHQL certification reassures businesses and consumers that ATI graphics processors are fully ready to unlock the stunning graphical features of the powerful Windows Vista platform, including Windows Vista Premium.

The World Wide Waste Of Time

People surf the net at work?? Say it isn’t so! [H]ard|OCP would never condone such a terrible misuse of company time as surfing the [H] at work…*ahem*…but if you do use this. Greatest. Tool. Ever.

Many employees spend most of their work day tapping diligently at their computers and looking intently at their screens -- but how many are updating their blog or sending funny e-mails instead of typing up that important memo, or responding to customer requests?

New DVD To End Format War?

Just a week after we told you about the three guys that filed for a patent on a triple layer DVD, a company has come up with a way to make cheap multi-layer DVDs. Apparently the two camps are not at odds, one having patented the technology, the other patenting the application.

The technological breakthrough comes one week after three employees at movie studio Warner Bros. filed a patent for the application of multiple formats on a single DVD disc. "There's no collision between Warner and us. They patent the application, we are patenting the technology. These are complementary patents.

All I can say is “hurry up”. With triple layer discs, the movie companies can put the movie on all three formats and then it is hardware versus hardware. If you want a $1,000 Blu-ray player, get it. If they get killed off by HD-DVD, no problem, your whole library still plays on HD-DVD and vice versa.

Intel Quad Core Kentsfield At IDF

Intel held a small press-only pre-IDF meeting and showed off the quad core Kentsfield processor. PCPerspective has info on quad core gaming, applications and typical power consumption.

In Intel's demonstration, they used a couple runs of Sysmark 2004 SE to simulate a typical "work day" and came up with some arithmetic to show this. This cost per year amount is based on typical sleep times, idle times and work loads, but of course this will vary from user to user

Pressure Mounts To Patch IE Flaw

Microsoft is in a bind right now with a serious IE flaw to patch before the next regular patch cycle, which is exactly two weeks away (Oct 10th). Hackers releasing sample code showing how to exploit the flaw doesn’t make things any easier either.

On Sunday, hackers released sample code showing how to exploit the IE flaw on a fully patched version of Windows XP, a move that security experts believe will step up the attacks. Criminals have been taking advantage of a previously unknown vulnerability in cPanel software, widely used by Web hosting providers, to install the IE malware on Web servers.

Google Calling For More Efficient Power Supplies?

Here is a bit of an odd one for you. Google, of all companies, is calling for a more efficient power supply standard. Don’t get me wrong, I like the idea, I guess I just didn’t expect it to be a Google backed initiative. Then again, they have a server farm that is probably bigger than NASA’s, why shouldn’t it be them talking about efficient PSUs.

The Google plan calls for a shift from multivoltage power supplies to a single 12-volt standard. Although voltage conversion would still take place on the PC motherboard, the simpler design of the new power supply would make it easier to achieve higher.

Intel To Announce Low End Xeons

According to News.com.com, Intel is expected to debut its Xeon 3000 processors at the Intel developer forum. Isn’t saying low-end Xeon an oxymoron? Kinda like saying high-end Celeron? Not any more.

The Xeon 3040, 3050, 3060 and 3070 processors, expected to ship this month, are geared for uniprocessor servers that typically use Pentium D processors. The 3000 series is based on the Core microarchitecture, which improves the performance and electrical power efficiency of Intel processors, compared with NetBurst-era chips such as Pentium D.

New Athlon 64 FX To Counter Intel In November

DigiTimes is reporting that AMD plans to launch three Athlon 64 FX processors for its 4x4 platform in November to counter Intel’s Core2Extreme QX6700.

The three Athlon 64 FX processors will be marketed under the FX-70, FX-72 and FX-74 names and have clock frequencies of 2.6GHz, 2.8GHz and 3.0GHz, respectively, with all models having 2MB (2x1MB) L2 cache and a TDP (thermal design point) of 125W, the sources indicated.

Cool Multi-Monitor Wallpapers

I have no idea who this person is but they have some of the coolest multi-monitor wallpapers around. Personally I run three monitors (for work, of course) and it is impossible to find cool wallpaper in sizes like these for free. The image below has been reduced from 7692 x 1604:

Washable Keyboards & Mice

I don’t know much about Unotron as a company but you have got to check out their line if washable wireless keyboards, washable wired keyboards and washable mice. The company lists uses for medical, education and government but I am telling you right now, with all the crap I’ve spilled in my keyboard, what is growing there qualifies as a medical disaster more potent than anything a university or military science could come up with.

Unotron is an emerging company that designs and manufactures high quality, washable data input and security devices that can be easily cleaned and disinfected to maximize user safety and minimize risk in nearly any environment.
